SGS incorporates a Diffractometer to its High Definition Mineralogy Services
The Advanced Mineralogical Facility of SGS Lakefield Research Chile S.A. located in Pudahuel, Santiago, has increased its service portfolio and expanded the current capabilities of High Definition Mineralogy thru QEMSCAN™, by incorporating a Siemens D5000 Diffractometer for X Ray Diffraction analysis (XRD). This initiative ties in with SGS´s permanent effort to lead the services for the mining and the industry in general.
The X Ray Diffraction (XRD) is a high technology and non destructive method, very useful for the analysis of an ample range of solid materials, such as metals, minerals, polymers, plastic, pharmaceutical, ceramic amongst others. The X Ray analysis of ground poly crystalline samples is one of the most powerful tools for process control for the minerals industry and for mining.
High Definition Mineralogy, is the quantitative study of minerals, using techniques such as QEMSCAN™, X Ray Diffraction, image analysis and other automated ones. Parameters such as content, chemistry, grain size, distribution, association and liberation are determined in a statistically robust manner, contrary to the traditional methods, more subjective and time consuming, such as optical point counting or petrography. High Definition Mineralogy has delivered great value to exploration, mining and metallurgical applications and it is anticipated that its areas of application will increase in a near future.
